Ladakh Ancient Monasteries: Hemis, Thiksey, Diskit and Alchi

Ladakh is often called “Little Tibet,” and nowhere is that clearer than in its monasteries centuries-old Buddhist gompas perched on cliffsides and hilltops, their whitewashed walls and maroon-robed monks a defining image of the region. Beyond their visual drama, these monasteries are living centres of worship, learning, and ritual, many still home to active monastic communities. This guide covers four of the most significant monasteries in Ladakh and how to plan a visit to each.

Thiksey Monastery: The “Mini Potala”

Thiksey sits about 19 km from Leh, and is often the first monastery visitors see for good reason. Built across twelve levels up a hillside, it’s frequently compared to the Potala Palace in Lhasa for its layered, fortress-like structure. Inside, a two-storey statue of the Maitreya Buddha dominates one of the main halls, gilded and seated, one of the most striking pieces of religious art in Ladakh.

The real highlight, though, is the morning prayer ceremony, usually held around 6:30–7 AM, where monks gather to chant, accompanied by horns and drums, as the first light hits the valley below. It’s a genuinely moving experience and one of the few places where visitors can witness monastic ritual up close, respectfully and quietly.

Hemis Monastery: Ladakh’s Largest and Wealthiest Gompa

Roughly 45 km southeast of Leh, tucked into a narrow gorge, Hemis is the largest and richest monastery in Ladakh, belonging to the Drukpa lineage. It houses an extensive collection of thangkas, statues, and relics, including a giant thangka of Guru Padmasambhava that is unveiled only once every twelve years during the Hemis Festival.

Hemis is best known for that festival a vibrant two-day celebration of masked Cham dances performed by monks in elaborate costumes, depicting the triumph of good over evil. If your visit doesn’t align with festival dates, the monastery itself is still worth the detour for its museum, quiet courtyards, and dramatic mountain setting.

Diskit Monastery: Guardian of Nubra Valley

Located in Nubra Valley, roughly a 4 to 5 hour drive from Leh over Khardung La, Diskit is the oldest and largest monastery in the valley, belonging to the Gelugpa order. It sits on a hilltop overlooking the Shyok River, watched over by a 32-metre gold-painted statue of the Maitreya Buddha that’s visible from a considerable distance across the valley floor.

Because Diskit is usually visited as part of a Nubra Valley trip rather than a standalone day trip from Leh, it pairs naturally with the Hunder sand dunes and Turtuk village.

Alchi Monastery: A Different Kind of Ancient

Alchi stands apart from the others in almost every way. Unlike the cliffside, fortress-style monasteries elsewhere in Ladakh, Alchi sits on flat ground beside the Indus River, roughly 70 km from Leh. It’s one of the oldest monastic complexes in Ladakh, dating back to the 11th century, and is no longer an active monastery meaning there are no resident monks or ongoing rituals to schedule around.

What makes Alchi extraordinary is its art. The wall paintings and wood carvings inside, preserved for nearly a thousand years, show clear influences from Kashmiri and Central Asian artistic traditions rather than the Tibetan style seen elsewhere in Ladakh. Photography is typically restricted inside the main shrines to protect the fragile murals, so this is a monastery best appreciated slowly, in person, rather than through a camera lens.

Planning a Monastery Circuit

Thiksey and Hemis can comfortably be combined into a single day trip from Leh, often paired with Shey Palace along the same route. Diskit requires a separate overnight Nubra Valley trip due to distance and the Khardung La crossing. Alchi, being further along the Leh-Kargil road, is often combined with Likir Monastery and the Magnetic Hill on a separate day trip westward from Leh.

If you only have one full day for monasteries, prioritize Thiksey for its dramatic architecture and morning prayers, and Hemis for its scale and history together they offer a strong overview of Ladakhi Buddhist heritage without requiring a multi-day detour.

Etiquette When Visiting

• Dress modestly shoulders and knees covered is the general expectation.
• Remove shoes before entering prayer halls where indicated.
• Walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels, in keeping with Buddhist tradition.
• Ask before photographing monks or interiors, as some halls restrict photography entirely.
• Keep voices low, especially during active prayer sessions.
• A small donation at the entrance is welcomed and helps support the upkeep of these centuries-old sites.

Final Thoughts

Ladakh’s monasteries aren’t just tourist attractions they’re centres of an unbroken religious and cultural tradition stretching back over a thousand years. Visiting even two or three of them, with a little patience and respect for their customs, offers a far deeper understanding of Ladakh than the landscapes alone can provide. Base yourself centrally in Leh, and Thiksey, Hemis, and Shey are all within easy reach for a relaxed, unhurried day of exploration.
