Proper acclimatization in Leh is the key to a successful Ladakh expedition, and your choice of hotel plays a massive role in how well your body adapts during those critical first 48 hours.
Traveling to Leh Ladakh is a dream for many, but the high altitude requires careful planning. Sitting at approximately 11,500 feet (3,500 meters) above sea level, Leh has significantly thinner air than the plains. If your body isn’t given time to adjust, you risk developing Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
When you fly directly into Leh, your body experiences this sudden drop in oxygen intake abruptly. If your cardiovascular and respiratory systems are not given adequate time to adjust to this thinner air, your body struggles to compensate, resulting in Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Recognizing the signs of AMS early is critical for a safe trip. Symptoms typically appear within 12 to 24 hours of arrival.
Mild Symptoms (Common during the initial adjustment period):

A Note on Prevention (Diamox): Many travellers consult their doctors about taking Acetazolamide (Diamox) 24 to 48 hours before landing in Leh to speed up acclimatization. Always speak to your physician before taking altitude medication, and be aware of harmless side effects like tingling in your fingers and toes.

Focus on a high-carbohydrate diet (rice, pasta, bread, clear soups) which requires less oxygen to metabolize. Skip heavy, deep-fried, or overly spicy foods
Alcohol dehydrates you, smoking depletes your blood oxygen, and sleeping pills dangerously suppress your breathing at high altitudes. Avoid all three entirely for the first 48 hours.
“Rest” does not mean taking a slow walk through the Leh market. It means staying at your hotel, lying down, reading a book, and sleeping. Avoid climbing stairs unnecessarily, and do not unpack heavily on the first day. Let your body adjust to its new baseline before you introduce any physical exertion.
